Here are my thoughts and so-called-mini-reviews on the previous two titles of the Underworld Franchises, since today i'm giving my review on the latest entry to the series, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans :
I'm a fan of the original Underworld. Set in a gothic and dark atmosphere, it tells the tale of the lycans (werewolves) and vampires being mortal rivals for centuries, and their struggles between them. Werewolves & Vampires on a fight? Who wouldn't be interested on that?
And then came year 2006, came the sequel, Underworld: Evolution. It blew, big time. I walked out of the theatre, confused (the storyline!), felt underwhelmed, and wish that it had never existed.
3 years later, now that i had watched Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (RotL), so here i am giving my reviews. I will speak with a open-mind, not attempting to compare this to its previous films. All i can say, it is better than Underworld: Evolution. And at least that's a good thing.
First things first, RotL is an prequel to the original Underworld. It tells the story of the origins of the hatred between the Vampires and the Lycans, and eventually how Lucian rallies the werewolves to rise against Viktor, the vampire lord. So for those who haven't watch the first two Underworld, i think this film is actually pretty easy to catch up; the storyline is very straightforward and simple, no mindless flashbacks and such.
The best bit of this film are the characters. Characterisation are pretty much well-thought out in this film. Lucian and Viktor, who already had been well-developed enough on the first film; the actors Bill Nighy and Michael Sheen replay their memorable roles with sheer greatness. Sad to say, Selene, the main heroine who is played by Kate Beckinsale is not back here. Instead a new character is introduced, Sonja played by Rhona Mitra. Rhona Mitra may lack the charisma of Kate but never fails to deliver her role and she's an asset to the film. Her dialogue flows smoothly and her presence is felt. The other minor characters like Raze & Tannis does what they should, and provides substance to the overall storyline. Nevertheless, this film's main bits are still on Lucian and Viktor, do watch them unfold and be impressed.
Setting-wise, it shares the same Gothic-dark look with its predecessors, with a change of setting to the Medieval. Yes, there is a castle, which is Viktor's Castle and some scenes set on the forest. The set production is nothing really impressive, as you have seen better - Lords of the Rings, even Harry Potter and such, but at least RotL nevers fall short. Average, is the word.
Action-packed throughout the show; mixed with a little romance and some political talks between the vampires, yeah, Underworld: RotL is pretty much exciting. Armed with fight-scenes between vamps and wolfs, and the epic-like battle when the Lycans try to invade Viktor's castle. But here again, it is just done in an average standard, you have seen better. The supposing end-battle which suppose to be epic, ended up looking as though the film suffered from the lack of the budget, as it is too short and wasn't conclusive enough.

The weakest point of this film is the length. Just 92 minutes, come on. By the end of it, I was expecting more. Yes, too bad thoughout the show, it is just filled with average settings and average fight scenes (and these are really what Underworld all about). If b0th had been done better, yeah, i would have love this film. Another point to point out is there is pretty much too many scenes with unnecessary gore and violence, it make RotL looks like a B-grade horror.
Well, to conclude all i can say is, this isn't too good, and isn't terribly bad. Made by 1st-time director debut by Patrick Tatopoulos, so yeah i forgive you, Patrick. At least the mood of the first two films is recaptured. Origins of several characters are explained here. Not a wasted effort to attempt to tell the history to the Underworld Franchise, but can definitely be better.
To my fellow readers, to truly enjoy this flick, just expect nothing but know that this is an ordinary-popcorn action flick; nothing truly special. Be ready to know it is indeed very short, and you will want more. All in all, Underworld is all about vampires and lycans tearing each other up on the big screen. Enjoy that. And again in a few years time. Underworld: 4 had recently been announced to be in production pretty soon. So count me in, i will be back in the ride once again.
My Rating: 6/10
+ Memorable Characters, good characterisation
+ Action-packed; "Werewolves & Vampires on a fight? Who wouldn't be interested on that?"
+ Mood and setting from the 1st two flick is recaptured
+ Story is easy to follow, good for those who are new to the franchise
- Too short, leave the viewer wanting more, really really more.
- Unnecessary gore and violence
- Average, ordinary flick. Nothing truly special.
If you enjoy this film, i recommend you also watch: Van Helsing (another average but really fun, movie also with vampires, werewolf and even, frankenstein) and the rest of the Underworld series -Underworld, Underworld: Evolution.
